Abstract

The increasing demand for electrical power in modern warships is pushing the limits of conventional mechanical propulsion systems, thereby bringing hybrid and fully electric propulsion solutions to the forefront. This study provides a detailed examination of the performance and economic evaluation of shaft generator-supported propulsion systems in frigate-class warships. Diesel-electric, gas turbine-electric, and hybrid configurations were comparatively examined; fuel efficiency, maintenance requirements, acoustic signature reduction, and operational performance metrics were evaluated based on the literature. A detailed strengths-weaknesses-opportunities-threats (SWOT) analysis was presented for the shaft generator-supported propulsion system, and the findings were interpreted from the perspective of the Turkish Naval Forces. The propulsion system in combined diesel electric and gas (CODLAG) warships is designed to provide energy for propulsion and onboard systems. It consists of gas turbines, diesel engines, and electric motors, enhancing maintenance efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The system eliminates the need for gear reduction, allowing easy speed adjustments for electric motors and reducing noise in the engine compartment.
